Thamnophis atratus

Aquatic Garter Snake

Identification/Variations: Of the four species of garter snake that inhabit in the Pacific Northwest, the Aquatic Garter Snake is often the easiest to identify. In our range this snake is typically black with white checkered markings. The stripes that are characteristic of most garter snakes are usually subtle or even absent. At first glance they may not look much like your typical garter snake as the stripes may be faded or lacking. While some individuals do have prominent stripes, Aquatic Garter Snakes may also be identified by their unique habitat and long narrow-shaped head.

Range/Habitat: he Aquatic Garter Snake ranges from Douglas County  in southwest Oregon south into California. They are found exclusively along open sunny and rocky creeks. This animal spends its days along the shores of streams and creeks feasting upon small fish, tadpoles, and frogs. To escape predators (and my camera) this snake usually takes to the water and is an excellent swimmer.

Notes: Thamnophis atratus is also commonly referred to as the Pacific Coast Aquatic Garter Snake. Because this snake hunts slippery fish in streams and creeks it has sharp needle-shaped teeth. When captured these snakes will bite to defend themselves. While it is not particularly painful bite, their sharp teeth can draw a good amount of blood if one gets ahold of you.
