Racer
Identification/Variations: A plain-colored snake that is often gone in an instant. Racers are typically a shade of dull gray, but may also be a brown or light black. Some individuals have a blueish tint. Young Racers are tan or gray with brown spots and look somewhat like Gopher Snakes. Note that Racers are always colored yellow below.
Range/Habitat: Racers enjoy low elevation grassland habitats in the Pacific Northwest. They are active during the day, but they are stealthy and are quite good at avoiding people. These snakes appear to not be present in western British Columbia or Washington. Note that Racers can be found in southwest Washington along the Columbia River where the south-facing slopes provide sunny habitat for many reptiles.
Notes: While Racers are harmless, they are notoriously a grumpy animal. They do not hesitate to bite. So if you put in the effort to chase this speedy snake down, you will be rewarded with multiple bites as well snake feces on your hands.
