Phrynosoma douglasii
Pygmy Horned Lizard
Identification/Variations: The smallest species of horned lizard. It’s color varies with the habitat in that in areas with red volcanic rock the local lizards tend to have red coloring and in areas that have more gray rock, the lizards tend to match.
Range/Habitat: These lizards are found throughout central and eastern Oregon except for the Blue Mountains and surrounding hills in northeast Oregon. They are also found in central and eastern Washington and southeast Idaho. They are found in sagebrush habitats at lower elevations and open pine forest at elevations sometimes exceeding 5,000’.
Notes: These lizards feed almost exclusively on ants. They are not fast and easy to catch, but do poorly in captivity.
