Plethodon elongatus

Del Norte Salamander

Identification/Variations: A gray or or black salamander. Young Del Norte Salamanders have a visible red stripe as youngsters that fades as they age. While they may be confused with Western Red-Backed Salamanders, their respective ranges appear to not overlap.

Range/Habitat: This salamander is found in the damp woods of southwest Oregon and northwest California. When conditions are wet, they move further away from water sources, but as the ground begins to dry out they seem to move towards stream banks. They can be found under bark, wood, and steambank talus.

Notes: f the many Plethodon species that inhabit the Pacific Northwest, the Del Norte Salamander ranges further south than any other.
