Aneides flavipunctatus
Black Salamander
Aneides flavipunctatus
Black Salamander
Identification/Variations: Black Salamanders are usually black, but they are also commonly frosted with varying amounts of green and may also have some mild spotting. In California they are frequently black with large white spots
Range/Habitat: This salamander is only in the Applegate drainage and surrounding areas in Oregon. It barely enters the Pacific Northwest and is usually found under moist talus outcropping on north-facing slopes in the early spring.
Notes: Unlike its cousins the Clouded Salamander and Wandering Salamander, Black Salamanders are not commonly found under the bark of downed trees. In coastal California they may be found under woody debris or streamside rock rubble.
