Diadophis punctatus
Ring-Necked Snake
Diadophis punctatus
Ring-Necked Snake
Identification/Variations: Easily identified by the orange ring around its neck. This small snake is typically an olive green or gray above and bright orange with black flecks below.
Range/Habitat: Ring-Necked Snakes are found in western Oregon at low elevation wetlands and open oak foothills. They are seldom found in the open but may be abundant. Look for them under flat pieces of debris such as boards, flat rocks, etc. They range north into south-central Washington.
Notes: These snakes do not bite and are rather placid in nature. As a defense measure they will flip upside down to show their angry orange "fire-belly" to discourage predators.
