Chelydra serpentina

Snapping Turtle

Identification/Variations: Introduced to the Pacific Northwest, the Snapping Turtle is a large scary-looking turtle that has managed to establish populations in our area. It is recognized by being extremely heavy-bodied and will not bask on logs like our other local turtles.

Range/Habitat: These turtles are common throughout the eastern United States, but a few populations exist in the southern part of the Puget Sound, the northern Willamette Valley, and near Coos Bay Oregon.

Notes: These turtles not frequently seen as they spend almost all of their time in the muck. They are also infamous for their incredibly strong jaws. There common name the Snapping Turtle is well earned.
