Common Garter Snake

Identification/Variations: This snake has many variations throughout its range across the country. In the Pacific Northwest this snake typically will have 3 yellow stripes will red markings in-between. However, in the Willamette Valley or Oregon this snake has only one stripe and has a red head. In the Puget Sound region, it has no red markings and the stripes are often a blueish or turquoise tint.

Range/Habitat: Common Garter Snakes are almost always found in and around marshes, lakes, and meadows where they feed on amphibians and fish. They are also found along slow-moving creeks and sloughs. These snakes are found throughout the Pacific Northwest, but are always found somewhat near a body of water.

Notes: This snake is unique in that it is immune the toxic skin of the highly poisonous Rough-Skinned Newt. No other animal is capable of preying on the newt without adverse effects.
