Dicamptodon tenebrosus
Pacific Giant Salamander
Dicamptodon tenebrosus
Pacific Giant Salamander
Identification/Variations: It is difficult to mistake a full grown terrestrial Pacific Giant Salamander for any other species. This is the largest terrestrial salamander in North America. They can reach lengths of up to a foot. They are typically brown, tan, gray, or purple with marbled blotching. Larvae are a purple brown and do not have the marbled blotching.
Range/Habitat: Larvae are found in cold creeks and streams in western Oregon and Washington. The terrestrial adults do not roam far from water, but spend most of their time underground. They emerge on rainy nights and can sometimes be found on seldom-used logging roads near shady creeks.
Notes: This is the only salamander in our region that has been known to bite. They have strong jaws and have the capability of drawing blood. I have managed to avoid this experience so far.
