Crotalus viridis

Western Rattlesnake

Identification/Variations: A dead giveaway is the infamous rattle this species carries. Be aware that other snakes may vibrate their tails in dry grass to make a rattle sound, but this critter is the only one that isn't faking. Also identified by a a large head and two heat-sensing pits below the eyes. There are 9 recognized variations of this snake, but only two; the Northern Pacific and the Great Basin Rattlesnake occur in the Pacific Northwest.

Range/Habitat: West of the Cascade Mountains this snake is found in the southern region of the Willamette Valley and to the south into California. It is found throughout eastern Oregon and ranges into Washington and British Columbia. It is found on rocky hillsides and prefers rock outcrops that have deep crevices.

Notes: A feared snake that has an undeserved reputation. These snakes have always been placid and mostly try to leave when I observe or photograph them. Be aware that they are dangerous and don't ever put yourself in a position where the snake feels the need to defend itself. If you are bitten it is usually your fault.
