Lampropeltis zonata
California Mountain Kingsnake
Identification/Variations: The California Mountain Kingsnake is arguably the most easily identified reptile in our region. It is the only snake in our area with black, white, and red bands.
Range/Habitat: In our area, these snakes are found in southwest Oregon in and around the Rogue River watershed. However there is a separate population that is found along the Columbia River Gorge in Washington. It is unknown why this population is isolated from this species' otherwise continuous range.
Notes: Because of their markings kingsnakes and milksnakes are sometimes confused for poisonous coral snakes. Note that there are no coral snakes anywhere in the northwest as they only live to the south and the east. Also remember the old cowboy saying: "Red touches black, friend of Jack. Red touches yellow, kills a fellow."
