Clouded Salamander
Identification/Variations: The Clouded Salamander is a medium to large woodland salamander that is gray or brown with varying amounts of brass colored flecking. Young may be a rusted red color that fades as they mature. What is most helpful when identifying this salamander is to look for squared off toes and the large glands at the base of the head.
Range/Habitat: Most often found under the bark of large downed logs this salamander is not found in marshy areas or in forests with decaying wood. These salamanders frequent downed Douglas Fir trees and hide in-between the bark and wood. They range throughout western Oregon and barely enter northwestern California.
Notes: They appear to be the most common in coastal areas. Clouded Salamanders are occasionally encountered on paved roads on rainy nights.
