Great Basin Spadefoot

Identification/Variations: Great Basin Spadefoot toads is a white or gray color with varying amounts of olive green and red spotting. They are a small toad and have a small black spade on the heal of each hind foot.

Range/Habitat: In our area these toads are found in south-central Idaho, eastern Oregon and Washington, and south-central British Columbia. They generally inhabit open ponderosa pine forests and grassland habitats in areas where vernal pools can be used for breeding in the spring.

Notes: Great Basin Spadefoot toads often take advantage of human irrigation practices in the dry desert and can be found near irrigation canals, golf courses, or backyard gardens from time to time.
