Ascaphus truei

Coastal Tailed Frog

Identification/Variations: The Tailed Frog is a small mountain stream-dwelling frog. Despite their name, only the males have "tails". This tail is in actuality a sex organ that allows these frogs to breed in fast-flowing streams and creeks. They are nocturnal and their eyes are narrow and vertical (like a cat's). They are typically an rust red/brown or an olive green color.

Range/Habitat: Tailed Frogs are found throughout the coast ranges and Cascade Mountains of Oregon and Washington and range north deep into British Columbia. They are found in and near cold clear creeks and streams.

Notes: A separate population of these frogs that occur in Idaho and northeast Oregon have recently been reclassified as another species, Ascaphus montanus.
