Identification/Variations: The Western Red-Backed Salamander is found in a variety of colors including red, orange, yellow, tan, and black. Unlike the Dunn's salamander, the Western Red-Backed Salamander does not have its dorsal colors bleed onto its sides and the tip of the tail is not black.
Range/Habitat: This salamanders are active when conditions are moist and above freezing. They are nocturnal, but can be found under logs and rocks. They range from southern Oregon north past the British Columbia border.
Notes: These salamanders vary greatly in color and in one location it is possible to find many variations. Along their range the populations along the central Oregon coast appear to be the most variable.
